Compressors & Freon Diagnostics

Finding the root cause when your heat pump blows cold air.

← Back to All Heater Repairs

The Heart of the Refrigeration Cycle

A heat pump operates using a closed-loop refrigeration cycle. If the compressor fails, or if the refrigerant leaks out of the copper lines, the system will completely lose its ability to transfer heat into your pool water.

Blowing Cold Air

If the air discharging from the top of the unit is ambient or cold (instead of cool/chilled), the refrigeration cycle isn't happening. We hook up specialized gauges to check your Freon levels and pressures.

Thermal Expansion Valves (TXV)

Sometimes the compressor is fine, but the TXV valve is stuck closed, preventing the refrigerant from doing its job. We can diagnose and replace faulty metering devices.

Dead Compressors: Repair vs. Replace

If your compressor is shorted to ground or mechanically locked, it must be replaced. Because this requires recovering the refrigerant, brazing in a new compressor, and recharging the system, we always provide an honest assessment of whether repairing the old unit makes financial sense versus upgrading to a new, highly-efficient model.
